What can impact the quality of the building damage assessment?
Assessment quality can be impacted by:
- Acquisition timing (if imagery is captured before the fire front reaches a structure)
- However, our approach ensures we revisit previously assessed areas
- Terrain complexity / distortion effects
- Availability of multiple acquisitions (revisits improve confidence)
- The presence of a dense canopy could make the SAR signal unclear
What kind of damage can you detect?
Wildfire Building Damage Assessment is designed to detect fully destroyed and undamaged structures.
It does not reliably detect:
- Partial damage (e.g., roof-only or facade damage)
- Smoke damage
- Interior damage
The output is a binary building-level classification:
- Likely Destroyed (examples below)
- Likely Not Destroyed (examples below)
