(FI) Activation threshold

Initiating flood analysis

For Flood Insights, ICEYE employs a structured prioritisation framework to determine which
areas are analysed first during an ongoing flood event. This framework considers population
density, observed flood severity, and customer interest to focus analysis where insights
provide the greatest value. Areas with higher concentrations of people, critical infrastructure,
or severe flooding are prioritised for early analysis, while customer-defined areas of interest
are incorporated to align outputs with specific operational needs. This approach ensures
comprehensive event coverage and timely delivery of high-impact Flood Insights.

  • Flood extent - A small flood in a densely populated urban area may be more significant than a larger one in a sparsely populated rural region. While there’s no universal threshold, we typically activate analysis for floods that cover multiple square kilometers and demonstrate a clear impact on the affected population or infrastructure.

  • Flood Depth - We look for evidence of water  depths sufficient to impact buildings (typically exceeding 30 centimeters).
  • Building Impact - While a baseline of 100 affected  buildings is used as a general
threshold for activation, activation can occur with fewer impacted structures based on event severity, forecasts, and expert judgment.
