(FI) Flood Types & limitations
The majority of floods analyzed are caused by overflowing rivers (fluvial flooding) and prolonged heavy rainfall (pluvial flooding), typically lasting longer than 12 hours. Other types of flooding are also analyzed; however, certain limitations apply.
Flash floods
Flash floods are events that develop very rapidly following intense rainfall. While all
significant flood events are monitored, the short duration of flash floods can limit
opportunities for satellite data acquisition. As a result, these events may be captured
less comprehensively than longer-lasting floods.
Coastal storm surge
The short duration, high variability, and often large geographic extent of storm surge
events can also present challenges for satellite data acquisition.
Despite these limitations associated with short-duration flood phenomena, many flash flood and coastal storm surge events have been successfully captured and represented globally using ICEYE Flood Insights.
